          J.N. "DING" DARLING NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

          Named for famed cartoonist Jay “Ding” Darling, a noted supporter of environmental causes and one-time head of the U.S. Biological Survey, this refuge was created 40 years ago in an effort to protect its extensive mangrove ecosystem.
